Tracy Osborne Award Winners

2010

Erika Barber, MD

Erika Barber is currently a Geriatric Fellow at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.  She completed her Medical Degree at the University of Nebraska College of Medicine in 2007, while being awarded the Edna Ittner Primary Care Scholarship during her third year of Medical School for scholastic achievement.

Dr. Barber developed her love of patient care beginning with her work as a nursing assistant while in high school.  Her interest in providing care to the elderly continued with her experiences in medical school on the Geriatrics rotation at UNMC, and during her residency, she developed a successful electronic medical record system in her continuity clinic to screen all elderly patients from harmful medications as classified by the Beers List.  After screening all patients in the clinic, a list of inappropriate medications was shared with her fellow residents, which convinced them to make medication changes.  The result was a significant reduction in inappropriate medications being prescribed in the clinic.

Dr. Barber has a passion for improving the quality of life of nursing home residents, promoting wellness, and partnering with the community.  Her “can-do personality” will make a difference in geriatrics and in Nebraska.
